Mental health experts across Bihar are highlighting the crucial role of self-belief and personal autonomy in maintaining psychological well-being, particularly among young adults facing societal pressures. Dr Priya Sharma, a clinical psychologist at Patna's PMCH, notes that individuals who maintain confidence in their abilities show significantly lower rates of anxiety and depression.

The emphasis on self-determination aligns with findings from the National Mental Health Survey, which revealed that Bihar has seen a 23% increase in reported mental health concerns since 2020. Many cases stem from external pressures regarding career choices, marriage decisions, and social expectations. Healthcare workers report that young people, especially women, often struggle with families and communities dictating life choices.

Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, Bihar has expanded mental health counselling services to district hospitals, offering free consultations. Counsellors emphasize teaching patients to recognize their inherent worth independent of others' opinions. "Building internal validation rather than seeking external approval is fundamental to mental resilience," explains Dr Sharma.

Health officials recommend that families create supportive environments where individuals feel empowered to pursue their goals. The state government's mental health helpline (08046110007) has recorded over 15,000 calls this year, with many seeking guidance on asserting personal boundaries while maintaining family relationships.
