As veteran actor Hema Malini gracefully accepted the late Dharmendra's Padma Vibhushan award in a traditional saree at the 2026 ceremony in New Delhi, health experts are drawing attention to the often-overlooked wellness benefits of wearing this six-yard garment.
Dr Anjali Sharma, a physiotherapist at Patna's Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, explains that proper saree draping naturally encourages upright posture. "The pleating and tucking process engages core muscles, whilst the pallu draped over the shoulder promotes spinal alignment," she notes. Regular saree wearers often develop better posture awareness compared to those wearing looser garments.
However, experts caution against overly tight draping around the waist, which has been linked to digestive issues and restricted breathing. A 2024 study by the Indian Council of Medical Research found that moderately draped sarees can actually aid digestion by maintaining gentle abdominal pressure without constriction.
Bihar's traditional tant sarees, woven from pure cotton, offer additional health advantages in the state's humid climate. The breathable fabric helps regulate body temperature and reduces skin irritation. Health officials in Patna are now including guidance on proper traditional attire wearing in their public wellness campaigns, recognising that cultural clothing practices can complement modern health advice when worn correctly.
