Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has confirmed that he is working on a sequel to his 2002 heist thriller Kaante, which could mark his 11th collaboration with actor Sanjay Dutt. In a recent interaction, Gupta revealed that the creative team has developed the foundational story for Kaante 2, though the project remains in its early stages.
The director-actor duo has delivered multiple commercial successes over the past three decades. Their partnership began with Aatish in 1994 and continued through films including Jung (2000), Khauff (2000), Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004), Zinda (2006), and Dus Kahaniyaan (2007). Gupta also directed Dutt in Alibaug, which remains unreleased. The actor additionally featured in special appearances in some of the filmmaker's other ventures.
Kaante, inspired by Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, featured an ensemble cast and became notable for its stylized action sequences and non-linear narrative. The film has retained a cult following among Hindi cinema audiences, particularly for its portrayal of a heist gone wrong in Los Angeles.
While Indian cinema increasingly embraces franchise filmmaking and sequels, details regarding the cast, shooting schedule, and production timeline for Kaante 2 have not been disclosed. The reunion of Gupta and Dutt continues to generate interest among Bollywood enthusiasts across India, including in Bihar where both filmmakers enjoy considerable popularity.
