As temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius across Bihar and much of India, health experts are recommending a lighter version of Maharashtra's popular Mango Mastani that supports weight management while providing essential nutrients during the summer months.
The traditional Mastani, famous in Pune, typically contains full-fat milk, ice cream, and generous amounts of sugar. However, nutritionists have developed a healthier variant using skimmed or low-fat milk, fresh Alfonso or Langra mangoes, and minimal natural sweeteners like dates or honey. This modified recipe reduces calorie content by nearly 60 percent while retaining the drink's signature creamy texture and tropical flavour.
To prepare this nutritious cooler, blend one cup of ripe mango pulp with 250ml chilled skimmed milk, two tablespoons of hung curd, and a teaspoon of honey. Top with chopped nuts, chia seeds, and fresh mango pieces instead of ice cream. The addition of Greek yogurt provides probiotics that aid digestion—particularly beneficial during summer when stomach ailments increase.
Dr Anjali Mukherjee, a Mumbai-based nutritionist, notes that mangoes are rich in vitamins A and C, which boost immunity during seasonal transitions. She advises consuming such beverages before 6 PM to allow proper metabolism. With Bihar's mango season yielding varieties like Jardalu and Himsagar, residents can enjoy this guilt-free treat while staying hydrated and energised throughout the sweltering summer.
