A Mumbai-based gastroenterologist has recommended that people should avoid lying down for at least two hours after consuming meals to maintain optimal digestive health. The advice comes amid rising complaints of acidity, bloating, and indigestion across urban India, including Bihar's major cities.

Dr Anjali Mehta, who practices at a leading Mumbai hospital, explained that remaining upright after eating allows gravity to assist the digestive process and prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the oesophagus. "When you lie down immediately after a meal, you're essentially inviting acid reflux and heartburn," she stated. The doctor also emphasised that eating slowly helps the brain register fullness signals properly, preventing overeating—a common issue contributing to digestive discomfort.

Health experts note that the problem is particularly prevalent in Bihar, where changing dietary patterns and increased consumption of oily street food have led to a surge in digestive complaints. Government health centres in Patna have reported a 30 per cent increase in patients seeking treatment for gastric issues over the past year.

Dr Mehta's recommendations include taking 20-30 minutes to finish meals, chewing food thoroughly, and engaging in light walking after eating. She advised that dinner should be consumed at least three hours before bedtime for best results. These simple lifestyle modifications can significantly improve digestive health without medication, doctors say.
