A dermatologist has issued a stark warning about the growing trend of ultra-thin 'barefoot' sandals popularised by luxury brands like Chanel, stating that these minimalist designs may pose significant long-term health risks to wearers' feet.
The medical expert emphasised that despite their fashionable appearance and premium pricing, these sandals fail to provide adequate protection for feet, potentially leading to conditions such as plantar fasciitis, heel pain, and structural damage over time. The lack of cushioning and arch support in such designs can strain the plantar fascia—the tissue connecting heel to toes—causing inflammation and chronic discomfort.
This warning comes at a time when India's footwear market increasingly embraces international fashion trends, particularly in metropolitan areas and tier-two cities including Patna. Medical professionals across Bihar have noted a rise in foot-related complaints among young professionals and students who prioritise style over comfort.
Dr Rajesh Kumar, an orthopaedic surgeon at Patna's Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, corroborates these concerns, noting that improper footwear remains an overlooked health issue in India. He advises choosing shoes with proper arch support and adequate sole thickness, especially given India's diverse terrain and climate. Experts recommend that footwear should provide at least 1-2 centimetres of cushioning to protect feet from impact and prevent long-term musculoskeletal problems.
