As temperatures soar across Bihar and the rest of India, swimming pools have become a popular refuge from the scorching heat. However, eye care specialists are urging swimmers to take necessary precautions to protect their vision from common pool-related ailments.

Dr Rajesh Kumar, a senior ophthalmologist at Patna Medical College and Hospital, emphasises that chlorinated water, whilst essential for pool hygiene, can strip away the tear film protecting the eyes. "We see a significant spike in cases of conjunctivitis and corneal irritation during summer months," he notes. The specialist recommends five critical steps: wearing well-fitted swimming goggles to create a waterproof barrier, avoiding contact lenses whilst swimming as they can trap bacteria, rinsing eyes with clean water immediately after exiting the pool, using lubricating eye drops to restore moisture, and never swimming with open eyes underwater.

Public pools in cities like Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur often witness heavy footfall during peak summer, increasing the risk of waterborne infections. Health experts particularly warn against swimming in pools with visibly cloudy water or strong chemical odours. If swimmers experience persistent redness, pain, or vision changes lasting beyond a few hours, they should consult an eye specialist immediately. Simple preventive measures can ensure that summer recreation does not compromise eye health.
