NEW DELHI — The Union Public Service Commission has announced May 24, 2026, as the date for conducting the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, marking the first stage of India's most competitive recruitment process for administrative positions. The examination will now be held across 83 centres throughout the country, following the addition of three new venues to the existing infrastructure.

According to reports, the expansion from 80 to 83 examination centres reflects the Commission's ongoing efforts to improve accessibility for aspirants across diverse geographical regions. This incremental adjustment comes as lakhs of candidates prepare for what remains the gateway examination to the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, and other elite civil service positions.

The Civil Services Examination comprises three stages: the Preliminary test functioning as a screening mechanism, the Main written examination, and the Personality Test interview. The Preliminary round typically attracts over 10 lakh applicants annually, though only a fraction advance to subsequent stages. The examination tests candidates on general studies and aptitude across subjects including history, geography, polity, economics, and current affairs.

The Commission is expected to release detailed guidelines regarding examination day protocols, including reporting times, permissible items, and identity verification requirements. Candidates are advised to regularly monitor the official UPSC portal for centre-specific information and any subsequent updates regarding the examination schedule.
